Falling Water Falls after a summer storm

High Water on Falling Water Creek (Click on photograph to purchase a print)

Falling Water Creek is by far the best for photograph when the water level is high enough to totally run over the ledge.  This shot was taken on July 4th 2003 which for this of year is a very rare event.  I had been hiking all day on Richland and heard the sounds of a thunderstorm off in the distance.  No water came up on Richland, but when I crossed over Falling Water Creek on the way back to my truck it had risen over 2 feet.  This photo was taken just as the last light of the day was on the creek so I was able to use a very long shutter speed.  Falling Water creek can be best reached by driving up Hwy 7 to Pelsor and then following Forest Service Road 1205.

Sylamore Creek sunrise near Gunner Pool Campground

Sunrise at Sylamore Creek (Click on photograph to purchase a copy)

Samore Creek is by far one of the best small creeks in Arkansas.  It runs eastward near Mountain View Arkansas and empties into the White River.  There are several great campgrounds along the creek most of which were created by the CCC back in the 1930′s.  The best of these campgrounds is Gunner Pool which is a favorite of mine.  This photograph was taken from the high concrete bridge over Sylamore Creek near Gunner Pool.  I was out walking around looking for early morning light and caught this photo with the sun breaking through the morning fog.  The Sycamore trees that year had some excellent color.

Fall Scene on Richland Creek

Here is a view of Richland Creek taken in 2005.  This particular year was a very dry year and by the end of November Richland and other surrounding creeks were almost totally dry.  This photograph was taken at Bill’s Thrill Rapid.  Since there was no current running and the water was just in pools, all the leaves that had fallen were just collected in the pool.  I have never seen a situation like this before or after on this creek.  If you look to the back of the photograph you can see the various trees just starting to turn to their fall colors.

Sunrise on the Cossatot River

I had traveled to the Cossatot the day before to try and catch some early fall colors.  It rained on and off the entire day, so I didn’t get many photographs.  The next morning I woke early and caught the sunrise on a perfectly calm pool just above Cossatot Falls.  There were a few trees that had just burst into wonderful fall displays, which were enhanced by the morning sun.

Springtime panorama of Cossatot Falls

The Cossatot River (Click on photograph to purchase a print)

This is a pano shot so I am going to let it run across the page. The best way to view the Cossatot River it is hike down along the left bank at Cossatot Falls.  Here you can see the 6 distinct drops that create the falls.  This pano which was taken with 6 separate frames of a 35mm camera, is of BMF rapid.  This is the last drop above the Washing Machine, the 4th drop which is considered the hardest.  This shot also shows the lime green color that Arkansas streams get in the winter and early springtime.

Springtime Vista of Bass Arkansas

Springtime view of Bass Arkansas (Click on photograph to purchase a print)

The valley of Bass is one of the more remote places in Arkansas.  It’s best reached from Hwy 374 and Mt Judea.  There are a few homesite and an old school house.  One of the best views of the Valley of the Buffalo National River can be enjoyed from the large mountain in the middle left of the image.  The road wraps around the mountain before heading down to Mt. Judea and on the bend offers the sweeping views of the valley.  This shot shows the effect of using a CL-PL on a wide angle lens as the sky is darkening from the left to right side.  I decided on this particular photograph that I liked the effect.

Rock and Ice Abstract on Richland Creek

Rocks and Ice on Richland Creek (Click on photograph to purchase a copy)

This photograph was taken back in 2003 on an exceptionaly cold day on Richland Creek.  All the rocks were coated in ice formations that had been left stranded as the creek dropped out.  I found this single formation most striking and eventually plan to rework it in Black and White.

One of the best hikes in Arkansas has to be the figure 8 loop trails of Pedestal Rocks and Kings Bluff.  This area is wonderful to photograph anytime of the year and in the winter makes for excellent black and white subject matter.  Make sure if the creeks are up to allow for enough time to hike over to Kings Bluff and view the waterfall there.

When you are photographing around Falling Water Falls,  most people will be focused on the Falls, I often will work the smaller creeks that are near by. This is one of the best.  It has a triple falls, this is the lower of the 3.  The flooding from 2009 and 2010 moved most of the trees that are shown in the photograph, but it’s still a beautiful spot.

Dogwoods and Blue Sky Springtime in Arkansas

Dogwoods against a blue sky (Click on photograph to purchase a print)

If you spend much time on my website, you will know that I love to photograph Dogwoods.  The Dogwood trees offers really something to photograph throughout the entire year.  Of course in the spring you have the wonderful white blossoms. In  the summer the green leaves with their distinctive  shape add to shape and form to a photograph and in the fall, these same leaves turn a deep blood red.  One of the best times to photograph a dogwood in in the fall with the setting sun back lighting the leaves.
